Day 1

Launceston – Hillwood - George Town – Low Head – George Town

Depart Launceston and take a 15 minute scenic drive through the beautiful Tamar Valley and turn to Hillwood. Visit the Meander Valley Dairy and secure beautiful cheeses, cream and strawberries! Meander down the road to the Hillwood Berry Farm to pick you own supply, pick up some jam, quince, liqueur or wine just to name a few, and of course their beauty and relaxation products! Fruit can be bought from Millers Orchards further on your Hillwood travels. Famous for their cherries, apricots, apples, peaches and more, your providore experience has just begun! Don’t forget to sample premium wines at Three Wishes Vineyard, the first of over 30 vineyards available on the Tamar Valley Wine Route.

Travel back to the East Tamar Highway and 15 minutes later, you’ll be welcomed at the highly regarded historical town of George Town. On the way into the town, stop at Mount George Lookout, an historic semaphore site, where you’ll gain the best picture opportunity of the valley and surrounding districts. At the fringe of the town, visit the welcoming Information Centre where our experienced helpers will be able to book the tours and accommodation to suit your needs. Well known as being one of the first Australian settlements, George Town is home to the old gaol, Model Village and display of the Womens Factory at the Watch House. Visit the home of the “Norfolk” at the Bass & Flinders Centre and learn all the stories of this fabulous vessel. Cross the road to enjoy all things special at Belle’s Tea Rooms for a great cuppa located near the famous Eddie Freeman carving at Windmill Point near Paterson’s monument. Of course, if you are an art enthusiast, visit the many locations of the NE Arts Trail.

Refreshed, drive the road to the most northern part of Tasmania to Low Head. Here you will relive the story of maritime history by visiting Australia’s oldest continuously operated Pilot Station, Maritime Museum, Low Head Lighthouse & Low Head Fog Horn – still sounded every Sunday! Enjoy great Tasmanian scallop pies at the Cafe whilst overlooking the beautiful waters at the pier.

Beautiful beaches at Lagoon Bay and East Beach are sure to make you unwind whilst you walk the waters, and when leaving visit the newest carvings of Eddie Freeman.

Early dusk is a perfect time to experience an up close and personal encounter with the Low Head Penguin Tours. Listening to your guide and getting familiar with the penguins, this tour is not to be missed!

Finally head back into George Town and dine at the most beautiful point of York Cove. Fresh local produce and award winning wines, your evening is complete whilst looking over the glistening waters of the Tamar River before retiring to a comfortable, quiet and restful night sleep at one of the many accommodation houses.

Day 2

George Town – Pipers River – Beaconsfield – Beauty Point – George Town

Early morning wakers will enjoy the cycle or walking track of the Kanamaluka Trail. Leading from York Cove to Low Head, the 6km open paths are edged on the sparkling Tamar River. Don’t forget to look for the sealife!

Before departing George Town for your next day of adventure, call in and pick up a few pastries from our award winning bakeries or succulent seafood from our big burly seamen at George Town Seafoods. Travel 5kms to the Pipers River turnoff. This road will lead you to the beginning of the experience known as the Tamar Valley Wine Route – home of award winning vineyards.

6 Vineyards adorn the eastern border of the Tamar Valley Wine Route, all with cellar doors for tastings and sales. Bay of Fires, Delamere, Sinapius, Dalrymple, Jansz and Pipers Brook Vineyards welcome all visitors and are delighted to share the stories of their wine and their origins. Return to the East Tamar Highway and turn left on the Batman Bridge slip lane to the West Tamar region of the Tamar Valley.

Experience the heritage and sea life of the West Tamar visiting Seahorse World, Platypus House and the Beaconsfield Mine & Heritage Centre.

Travel back to George Town for a relaxed dinner and restful night sleep, taking in all the beautiful sunsets which are famous in Provincial Tamar.
